Introducing: Critics' Quips

Every Friday There Will Be Films will be posting eloquent, silly, or searing quips from critics' reviews of various films. To start off the tradition, here is the renown New York Times critic A.O. Scott on Tim Burton's Frankenweenie:
Why can’t any girls compete in the science fair? And why did one of the only nonwhite residents of New Holland have to be an Asian boy named Toshiaki (James Hiroyuki Liao) with the exaggerated accent of a World War II movie villain? Partly, I realize, to set up a nifty “Godzilla” takeoff, but also, less forgivably, to supply a bit of cheap ethnic humor. Toshiaki’s pet turtle is named Shelley, a joke that works on several levels, one of them painfully unfunny.
